As a homeowner in nyc and a person of faith, I’m saddened by this young man’s attitude toward attending masjid (which is a place to humble oneself, to prostrate oneself before God.) We are a city where God is worshipped in a nearly endless variety of sacred forms and guises. But, for each thousand styles of piety and each thousand aesthetics with which to celebrate humanity’s relationship with the Creator, there is a way to mock or commodify or “photobomb” our beautiful religious lives here, placing sport or fashion or pride into precious and grounding moments where worldliness and shallowness do not belong. Our rituals tbat affirm life and holiness outnumber our follies and foibles a thousand to one. There’s no need to put sin and idolatry on parade, especially during a religious holiday.
